The World Institute of Pain (WIP) was established in 1993 as a worldwide organization promoting interventional pain by bringing together the most recognized experts in pain medicine. The organization aims to facilitate consensus building through the education, training, and certification of physicians, thereby championing the judicious, safe, and efficacious performance of interventional pain techniques.
WIP organizes annual or biannual congresses since 1998, with the last one being organized in Budapest from August 24 to 27, 2022. WIP also hosts advanced pain conferences and hands-on cadaver workshops, with emphasis on interventional techniques, in Miami, Taipei, Budapest, and Istanbul.
The Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice® (FIPP ®) certification examination was established in 2001; since then, a total of around 1,400 physicians have been FIPP® certified, representing 64 countries. The Certified Interventional Pain Sonologist (CIPS) certification examination was established in 2010; a total of 193 physicians representing 31 countries have received CIPS certification to date.
Our official journal, Pain Practice, has been published since 2001, and features multidisciplinary articles on pain and analgesia that provide up-to-date research, evaluation methods, and techniques for pain management. WIP has a network comprised of sections based on regions or countries with the strongest concentration of FIPP Members. WIP has 27 sections, and each section has an elected chair who serves on the WIP council and votes on future officers via an election system.
WIP has also established registered sections since 2018 and the first registered section is Turkey, followed by the Taiwan section.
Within the networking system, WIP has the EPP “Excellence in Pain Practice” Award & Recognition Program for Pain Centers. Established in 2010, EPP currently has centers of excellence in Africa (1), Asia (5), Australia (1), Europe (8), North America (9), and South America (6) to train and educate future generations.
